Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My Audi is still isn't starting right away I just
replaced the valve cover gasket's because gas and
oil was getting on the spark plugs and it was
misfiring I also replaced the spark plugs and spark
plug wires and the initial coil and got a brand new
battery I'm still having the issue with it not starting
right away but when I get it started it has a rough
idle and it starts every single time after that really
easy I tell it's been setting over night. Could the
Emissions PVC cause this I would appreciate the
help

When you removed the spark plugs ,, did you examine the spark area for carbon or oil? Plugs are a great diagnostic tool ,, I suspect only a couple are different than the others when examined . I don't understand your " because gas and oil was getting on the spark plugs" ,, I've never heard of Gas getting on the engines exterior unless a fuel line broke ,,,of course if that happened it would be quite obvious // My initial diagnosis is // A blocked or restricted exhaust
Everything's brand new from the exhaust manifold all the way down to the pre-muffler and the oil and gas problem along with the plugs have been fixed along with the valve cover gasket. So I'm kinda stuck on options but I have a few things I'm going to check.
Does that include the catalytic convertor ? I guess it does because the resonator is after the cat. A shot in the dark may be the EGR but your already starting to spend big bucks and rebuilding an engine one part at a time will get expensive but // I can't help one more "educated guess" with... another suspected area may be the fuel rails or clogged injectors,,, they can get clogged on high milage engines ... did you examine the plugs? I guess I'll step back off this ,,, trying to analyse a problem from a distance is not beneficial ,in many cases // to the owner ...Good luck
Thanks for your suggestions I appreciate it I'm going to check the injectors next
i used to have a 2.8L 1998 engine i think i may be able to help here. For idle issues i can tell you a good number of places to check that is not as costly to replace then others. First place to check is the crank case hoses. pull them off the headcovers and check them for signs of sludge. This is the number one place for idle issues in these cars and they will always be clogged after 150,000km if they are replace all that pvc all the way to the throtle body including the valves and such in betwen. next is an issue with where you park the car and hot hot the car is before you start it. The 99 has the same heat sensor in the top of the throle body tube as mine did if it is a hot day out the car will not start cause the sensor malfunctions and thinks the car is overheated. pull the sensor and MAFS out and clean them with MAFS cleaner do back and front. this should correct hot day starts. anouther issue can be a vacum hose which runs along under the plastic head cover behind the oil cap. there is a plastic /ruber like vacum hose there that often after a few years of heat from the engine will go britle and break and this has a very significant impact on your idle and start up. I repalced mine and all my vacum hoses with brand new line which you can get from audi by the foot and cut to the size as needed for around 5-10$ replacing the vacum lines at this point would be a good idea if not already done as they will be preaty brittle at this point and can also crack under the casing with out relizing it. Now the only other things i can think of that would impact starting you have already repalced. and injectors would not be an issue unless you put low quality fuel in your car. low quality fuel will often impact the fuel filter first which would cause rough start ups and idle troubles as well. so if after doing all those other checks does not work replace the fuel filter and see if it helps as it is cheaper then replacing the injectors. next would be to have the fuel system preasure checked if it is bellow par it would either be the pump or the fuel regulator that is the issue. if the fuel system checks out and the car still runs poorly tthen and only then would i move on to injectors. And if you do these have them checked and or cleaned unless they are physicly broken or really cloged with with carbon. Any ways let me know if this helps most of this you should be able to easily check on your own and do at home with little to no tools.
I'll let you know as soon as I'm done with everything on the Audi and thanks for your help.
