Is this an automatic? If so sounds like the torque converter is not seated all the way back into the bell housing.

You would spin the torque converter while pushing back on it until it seats back into the trany bell housing. Your fingers would not fit behind the torque converter when seated all the way back.

If this is a standard transmission then the clutch disk is not lined up to allow the output shaft of the trany to go into the pilot bearing on the end of the crankshaft.

If this is an automatic trans, the torque converter has to click in 4 times, not 3 times like most trans.
