Jeep Grand Cherokee will back up about 1 1/2 inches and then abruptly stops like brake is sticking.

Asked by Heather Aug 25, 2016 at 08:58 PM about the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Checked brakes and they are fine.  No fluid leaks anywhere.  If you attempt to
move after in catches, it then makes a grinding noise.  I can then move it
forward a little and it again stops and if I try to continue going forward a little, it
makes the grinding noise again.  No burning smell or smoking coming from
anywhere either.  Any ideas anyone?

It also could be the front or more likely the rear differential. Take a look at the fluid, looking for pieces of metal. Also check the fluid in the transfer case.
