It can take a few on/off cycles for it to reset itself, if it doesnt unhook your battery for 15 mins and press the brake pedal before reconnecting it (this will disapate any last bit of power). If it comes back on you can have codes read for free at alot of auto parts places, you may find there's a leak in thr evap system

Although.... any time you're doing any kind of eletrical work under the hood or major disassembly you should/need to unhook the battery. I get what you're saying, it minimizes the risk (which is slim) but you'll never get away from the fact that at some point that battery WILL be unhooked and chances are good that absolutely nothing bad will happen. You probably have as good a chance as getting hit by lightning or winning the lottery

The problem is you can’t reset the gas cap light with an OBD tool. The light only comes on when the vehicle is running. The OBD tool only clears codes when the car is off with the ignition on. The light is not illuminated at that point.

Unfortunately no. I was thinking about taking it to the dealer

Leaks in the evap system can cause the same thing because they're connected. You don't necessarily have to take it to the dealership, any competent shop with the right equipment can smoke the system to test for leaks

I have a 2015 Cherokee Latitude that just turned 21,000 miles. Last Saturday I fueled up. Later the gas cap light came on. Removed the cap...tightened it. Light later went off. Then Thursday the check engine light came on. I needed an oil change and went to the dealer. They can’t get me in until the 18th of April. But they did say the code was for leakage. They suggested replacing the gas cap for $25. Hooking it up to their diagnostic machine is $147. How long should it take for the check engine light to go off?

Well I will tell you this I have a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, smoke test revealed no leaks. Replaced the gas cap and the ESIM, light came back on which after five days triggered the check engine light. At this point the only thing I can start doing is replace evap system parts in a effort of a wild goose chase.
