install oil pump

The oil pump is part of the front timing cover so you have two options, one is an oil pump repair kit which is simply 2 gears, one with a shaft on it, and it only takes about 5 minutes to install. Simply remove the oil filter, then remove about 6 bolts on the housing that the oil filter screws onto, once the bolts are out, the housing will fall off, flat then plate in between, and the oil pump gears will fall out with the shaft. Literally takes 2-3 minutes to remove filter, oil adapter and gears. The shaft goes into the bottom of the distributor gear, that's what turns the oil pump. Install: install gear with shaft first and spin it until it pushes up in place (notches on shaft and distributor gear need to mesh together). and then slip the second gear into place. NEXT STEP IS VERY IMPORTANT. Pack the gears with as much engine assembly lube as you can, without it the gears wont prime. clean up the mating surfaces, install new gasket and reinstall midplate and oil filter adapter, new oil filter, add 1 qt of oil and start the motor, make sure oil pressure gauge rises within 15 seconds. Now if you remove the gears and there are scratches, scrapes, gouges on the walls there the gears ride, then you need to replace the entire timing cover, which is a lot more difficult.
