Replacing Clutch

Asked by Siena_747 Feb 17, 2017 at 08:00 PM about the 1998 Audi A4 2.8 quattro Sedan AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1998 Audi A4 Quattro with 165,000 miles. I  have had many things replaced over the years. Recently the starter was replaced and a speed sensor.  Three days later car wouldn't start. I had it towed to a different shop as the previous shop had done some things that basically ripped me off. New shop specializes in Audis only. They said that the starter was not compatible with the flywheel and had damaged the flywheel. New starter is also damaged. Also told that the clutch is worn and should be replaced when they replace the flywheel and starter. The clutch only has 54,000 miles on it. I would like to avoid replacing the clutch at this time, as the expense is $$$. Shouldn't it last more than 54,000? I have maintained my car very well.

It was not grinding. Three days after new starter, it stalled again when I downshifted. Would not start again. Had it towed. They replaced the speed sensor. Locked up again. That's when I had it towed to new shop where it is.now. This shop said that the clutch should be replaced now to save $1300 later. I looked at my paperwork. Clutch actually only has 51,167 miles on it. I asked how badly it was worn. Was told they couldn't tell unless they took it out. Obviously would like to avoid the clutch at this time.
