When I turn my headlights on my dashboard becomes almost invisible

The other night I installed a new radio in my
Lincoln. When I turn the headlights on the
dashboard completely disappears, but when
I turn the auto lamps on it becomes just
barely visible.

the automatic dimmer of the dash lights does this to compensate for darkness so your not blinded by dash lights, [like thats happening ] .the manual brightness control knob turns them brighter if needed older cars have globes out needing replaced , wiring tarnish resisting currant flow ,
