What's wrong with your MAP sensor? - especially since your car doesn't have one?

The 1997 4.6L Electronic Engine Control (EEC_-V) OBD-II system utilizes a Mass Airflow sensor to measure density, speed and temperature of the air coming into the engine. The computer will use the DPFE sensor to measure Barometric Pressure when the key is turned on but before the engine is started. A MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor) is used by the older EEC-IV (OBD-I) system to help the PCM determine engine load. It also was used prior to start-up to determine Barometric Pressure. Sometimes, the older cars had to be shut off and restarted when traveling to a high altitude location - to reset the Baro readings.
