Front End Creaking Noise

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2004 Town Car, 75000 Miles. I have a creaking noise that I cannot for the life of me, pinpoint. This noise is coming from the front driver’s side. It will only make noise when the car is in motion, turning from side to side (more noticeable at slower speeds). I cannot hear any noise if I physically push on the front of the car or rock it back and forth (Outside the car). Again this only happens when the car is in motion. The noise will disappear when it is wet outside, either during or just after rain or carwash. Once everything dries up, the noise re-appears. I also have a noise what appeared to be something loose behind the dashboard (same side). I ripped everything apart (inside the car) and cannot find anything.  This knocking noise started before the creaking noise and now I think they are both connected. When it is wet outside, both noises disappear. The weird thing is that the one noise sounds like it is coming from inside the car (behind the dashboard) and the other sounds like a suspension creak. Took it to the dealer twice and they could not find anything. Note: I cannot feel anything in the steering, suspension, the car drives perfectly straight, does not pull.

check the metal plate on the back of the rotor (engine side) make sure it isnt bent and rubbing the rotor.

Thanks for the feedback. I went back out and pulled both front wheels off. Nothing is rubbing or bent and everything looks tight. I lubed everything down again, but nothing pops out (or is staring me in the face). All of the rubber boots around the ball joints and linkage are in tact. I have stuffed rags around all of the body parts in the front end. There is no play in the front wheels either left and right or up and down. Talk about elusive (and frustrating).

out of curiosity, have you ever had the bushings replaced with polyurethane ones?

No. Bought the car with 30k and now has 75k. I have not done any work on the front end. I will see what happens when I inject some greese in the ball joints and tierod ends. If that doesn't work, I will check the bushings.

get silicone lube and spray the bushings, see if that makes the creaking go away. If it does it may be time to look into replacing them

just came across this forum and was reading thru when i noticed your entry. i also have 2004 TC. there is a service bulletin 04155 for this problem. something to do with front spring insulators. also logged with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA item number 10011151). the dealer could not confirm that my vehicle had this problem although it also has front end squeak. they did, however, grease the hood rests/stops and seemed to minimize the problem for a while.

I have a 2004 Town Car. I was having creaks and squeaks while turning wheels and occasionally on a bump. It got worse, then, as above, rain could lessen noise for a bit. I know what it is, just cant think of the name for the part. I looked at them and saw where it was the problem while on the rack. I thought it was the Non-greased bearing in the wheels. Actually, I was shown underneath the front end and there are 2 obvious brackets, about 5-6" at longest section, and there are two off them on each end. the one on the pssgner side is very loose. He shook it and it made that squeaking noise and was noticeably loose tot he hand. The driver's side on was tight. Was told its a wear-part...about $50 for the part. I just cant recall what its called. One word in the name of it is "idler", such as in "idler arm" but would have to be some brackets that hold it in place or something. I have to fix it asap. If anyone has read this far and knows what part i'm referring to, please let me know? It looked quit simple (with correct tools). Thanks

HAD THE SAME NOISE ON MY 2010 TOWNCAR. TURNED OUT TO BE THE HOOD PINS ADJUSTMENTS. TRY TAKING THE CAR FOR A RIDE WITH THE HOOD POPED OPEN. IF THE NOISE GOES AWAY, GREASE THE RUBBER CAPS ON THE PINS WITH WHITE GREASE. GOOD LUCK

I have had this happen after an alignment. Loose bolts caused it. Rear of sub frame, 15/16 Camber adjustment bolts. The LOWER Front Control Arm To Frame torque is 220 Ft-Lbs.

My 03 TC has the popping noise in left front. Upper ball joints were replaced and noise went away. Exactly one week later, noise is back, and worse. I "felt" the noise once in my left foot on the floor board. 3 shops can't locate the problem! (Wish I had my 03 Vic Interceptor back); but I totalled it, and replaced it with the TC. TC has 93K on it.

More info on the above post: When pulling out of my level driveway and turning left ( slightly down hill), the noise is very much like a bad cv joint on front drive car would make; or like a rock in the wheel cover, except mine has the 17" aluminum wheels. # shops can't find the source. I now have some tips from this site, so back to shop we go!

Update: Shop kept my 03 TC all day Thursday. Supposedlt tightened all bolts, checked stabilizer links, etc, etc. Now they decided the noise is from the steering rack; but it doesn't seem logical. I still believe the noise is somewhere in the left suspension. The teering is very smooth lock to lock, and I feel no bumping in the wheel. This thing is beginning to get on my last nerve. Does anyone think it COULD be the rack? I was not present when they had the car on the lift, so that I could listen for myself. They use a drive on ramp style lift, with built in jacks to lift the wheels up, if needed. ANY other suggestions, please? I know this is tagged onto an older post, but hope someone sees it. 8/5/16.

1 finetime called it! Thanks man!. I have a 2011 TC and had the same squeak. Drove me nuts. So I popped the hood, and slightly raised the hood stops (4 of them) and greased all - problem solved. I also greased the upper and lower hood latches as well as the hood hinges. Nice to have my quiet TC back.

Just bought my second Town Car with exactly the same noise. It is the bracket that holds the front bumper to the frame. It wears down to the metal and squeaks no matter what you try.

Got rid of the car a few years back. The creaking noise appeared a few months after an accident repair. I wound up trading the car for a 04 TC Ultimate because the Number 1 cylinder lost compression. Sold the Ultimate (kicking myself in the ass) and bought a brand new 2014 Taurus. Nothing drives like a Town Car!

While browsing sites about Lincoln Town Cars, I came across this chain of complaints and responses and thought I'd add some incite of my own. With 216,000 miles on my '03 Cartier, I certainly know and appreciate all the concerns for maintenance regarding suspension, and steering components, idler arms, ball joints and the like. Years ago, I wasted good money letting an auto repair shop chase my squeaks, assuming like others that I had worn parts somewhere in those steering or suspension areas. Though I might have needed some of the repairs, the squeak did not disappear. Being the son of a stubborn Norwegian mechanic, I began to look for those items that a "Pull and Replace" auto mechanic at shops these days would not take the time to diagnose or discover. What I discovered that was the culprit in my case, was the hood latch assembly and the associated hooks. There are two "U" bars that are captured by mechanical latches. These "U" bars originally had a coating on them to keep them from allowing metal to metal contact when latched. In my case, the coating on both "U" bars had worn off at the point that they were captured by the latching hooks. In addition, I felt that the main latch on the hood side above my head, might be causing some of the squeaking due to the complicated set of latch and holder brackets and springs that looked a bit worn and rusted. My solution was to do the following, first I coated the main latch on the hood and the second capture latch below, with a good coat of WD40. Then on the two "U" bars that had the coating worn off, I cut a Bic pen into short pieces that would fit the lower arm of the "U" bar and sliced the plastic sections down the middle to allow them to slip over the bottom section of the "U" bar. While reviewing this today, I decided to replace the Bic pen sections and spray the parts again with the WD40. While I think that I may now have some creaking or clunking going on in the steering or suspension due to age and miles, the squeaks that I had and that I believe most of you are discussing, is almost completely gone. Maybe not 100% as I think that the main hood latch is just too worn or rusty and may need replacing. I just spray it occasionally with WD40. Sorry that I cannot post more than on picture at a time. Love my Town Car, good Luck to you all, Dave
