You could have a clogged drain in the well in front of your windshield. Also, the heater element could be leaking and finding its way inside your firewall. I had the latter do this in my "98". Not certain if the 04 heater is the same but not a whole lot changes from one model year to the other.

Lift up your hood and you will be able to inspect the black plastic area right below the windshield wipers. That plastic catches water and drains it out through two drains. One drain is on the passenger side and has a rubber flap and you can pull up that flap and check to see if leaves clogged it up. The other is closer to the center of the car mostly on the drivers side. Both drains get clogged with leaves and cause water to enter into the car on the carpet. Just clean the leaves out and use a water hose to check to ensure it drains. I have a 2004 Town Car and a 2003 so I am familiar with this.

about a second ago Best Answer They drain area is clogged with leaves and caused the seal to dryrott. Its located under the hood up against the passenger side fire wall. Take off the black plastic casing around the wiper to expose it. Use automotive silicone sealant to repair it
