MY Eddie Bauer Explorer did that this summer. It was an ignition coil. The 4.6L V8 has a coil for every cylinder. Go get a service shop to read the codes on your on-board computer so they can tell you what cylinder is misfiring. Modern cars have computers that can monitor the combustion in every cylinder. They can also record misfires. After you replace that coil, it should be fine.
