Linda: Two problems. 1) the AC in your car probably uses R-12 freon, which is no longer supplied in the US. Any that comes available is VERY expensive. The newer freon, R-134a cannot be mixed with R-12. 2) Therefore, your system needs to be converted to R-134a by a reputable service establishment. The compressor needs to be checked to assure its functioning. There are videos on YouTube concerning this issue.
