why won't my car take its gas when pushing peddle?

I HAVE A 98 GRAND AM SE I CAN START IT UP AND IT SOUNDS GREAT BUT AS
SOON AS I HIT THE GAS PEDDLE IT BEFORE IT EVEN REACHES 2000RPM IT
ACTS AS IF ITS OVER REVING...THE GUY I TRADED OUT OF IT SAYS INTAKE
GASKET BUT I DON'T THING SOO.. MUFFLER IS REALLY RUSTY AND STUFF I
JUST WANTED TO HAVE SOME OPIONS TO CHECK!! THANKS TO YOU ALL

could be air that comes into the system, can be fuel pressure lost as well, there is a lot of things that could go wrong on it. first try sealing the intake.
