if i were you i wouldnt mess with it unless it is acting up by missing or running bad and even then it could still be something else like spark plugs or wires computer gas filter or distributor block and if those arent your problems then take it to a qualified technician and have them check it over

In answer to your question, yes, it uses a timing belt that should be replaced at 100k miles or slightly before.

the 2.4 and 3.4 do not have timing belts they are a chain drive system. no replace ment recommended

timing belt or timing chain-eather way if your car has 80 to 100,000 miles on it ,is recomended to change,im sure it has the belt.

All motors for that car have a timing chain. The v6's for that car have the camshaft in the block, on the heads. The chains in those almost never go bad, and it will be quite expensive to replace, due to the extensive labor. However, the tension guides in the 2.4 get worn out and the chain can flop around, so definitely have those checked out.

I have a 2004 Pontiac grand am, it started up with a strange sound I never heard, some guy said because of sound and slight smell of rubber it's my timing belt- - is that true??
