Does anyone have information regarding the timing belt?

Dear dpkuch-- That 2.4L engine in your 2000 Pontiac Grand Am is what is known as a non-interfering engine. It means that if the timing belt snaps, the pistons don't get all jammed up and ruin the engine. It doesn't mean that you shouldn't care if the belt breaks because you could face other problems. Have a professional look at it if you have any doubts. Good luck from Bovan.

The above answer is a bit ignorant. The 2.4l has a timing CHAIN not a belt and they don't snap they stretch that's why the valves don't get damaged. Mainly it's due to a broken tensioner.
