'99 Grand Am P1404 code/EGR valve

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello,

I have a 99 Grand Am with 3.4L v6. I am having
trouble with a P1404 (EGR closed performance)
code that keeps setting the check engine light. I
have replaced the valve 3 or 4 times over the past
few years in addition to rebuilding a few of them,
but the code keeps eventually coming back. It is
getting to the point where I suspect it might not
actually be the valve that is the problem. I checked
the electrical signals a year ago and everything
looked normal. I recently cleaned the mass air flow
sensor and throttle body, thinking that might be
throwing off the computer's readings. The engine
itself seems to be running fine at the moment
(though I have had some roughness at idle/low
throttle in the past), but the check engine light is
coming on just about every time I get off a
highway. Sometimes I also get an engine knock
sensor code in addition to the EGR. Does anyone
have any other ideas or  suggestions for what
might be causing this?

Thanks!
Scott

Yes, on this vehicle the EGR valve postion is a learned voltage in the PCM engine computer. Once again make sure its very clean... free of carbon in the valve, use magnification to inspect it and clean it again! now if you only do this the code will reappear-later.. even if you clear it with your code reader. The PCM must be disconnected from power supply / battery or it can't reset voltage correctly use your oscilloscope and you can confirm this CLSDV .076 is OK Regards

Thanks for the reply Auto_Centric - I tried what you suggested by disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes, but the same code came back as again today as soon as I got off the highway. Seems like it was too soon to throw the code (drove 30 miles at most) if the system was just reset unless it was some other problem? Any ideas? Thanks, Scott
