2000 Grand Am Code P1632

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2000 Grand Am is randomly shutting off while stopped and sometimes even while I'm driving. It won't start up until a few retries later. I don't have any service engine or security lights on or flashing. But the car just shuts down and I can start it up after a minute or so again. This all started a few months ago for no apparent reason. I've taken it in at a local garage and they told me they saw the following codes:

P0336 => Crankshaft Sensor
P1632 => Theft system

I got them to replace the crankshaft sensor but its still doing the same thing. It's actually gotten worse than before I changed the sensor. It used to do this only once or twice a week. Now after changing the sensor it happens every other day. The car is old and I really don't want to spend any more money on it. I've read online that you can cut the yellow passlock wire to bypass this issue. Does anyone know if this solution will work? Any help is appreciated.

Thank you,

Mike

I would take out the Ignition Control Module and have it tested at Auto Zone to see if it is ok. When they are old, and heat up with the engine, this is what happens. Also I wouldn't be cutting any wires to the passlock. P1632 Theft deterent fuel disabled. The theft deterent does not stall the engine as you drive or once it is started, it can code up if you are excessively cranking the engine with a no start condition,. .Check the security light it should go off when the vehicle is started, If this still has trouble you may need a ignition switch

Rowefast, thank you for the quick reply. There are no lights on for service engine or security on the dash. Everything turns off once the car starts. Also, I had the car scanned again and there are no codes popping up either. It's really very strange. By the way is the ICM located on the cover that goes on top of the engine with the pointy heads that sit on top of the spark plugs? Just want to make sure I know where the ICM is. I will try your suggestion and report back. Thank you, Mike

You could go to the parts store and look at one to see what it looks like. It is a rectangle unit with wires running to it. I am not sure where it is on your engine. Guys at the parts store probably could point it out for you.

I replaced the ICM and coils and now the car doesn't even start at all. I even put the old ICM and coils back and still the same no start. I get crank and starter runs but no ignition. I think it might be the fuel pump what do you think?

Need to see if there is spark from the coils. If there is then make sure the fuel pump runs when you turn the key to on position. It should prime up and then turn off. If it does that then check the fuel pressure. Should be around 30 to 45 lbs.

I took it in to the shop last week and they found out it was the fuel pump. I replaced it and it seems to be running fine now (keeping my fingers crossed). Thanks Rowefast for all your help. Cheers.

Oh also, he mentioned that the ignition key had some wiring issues with it where some wires were burnt and had to be replaced/fixed.
