Bell Sound from Under Hood

Asked by Guru9XR9V Jun 21, 2017 at 01:59 PM about the 2000 Pontiac Grand Am GT

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Recently my car started making a sound that reminds me of an old school bell ringing.  At the very least, it is a metal on metal sound.  It comes from under the hood.  It had made the sound once or twice prior in the last couple months but not it seems to be continuous. it is most obvious sitting in park idling or at low speeds.  I do not hear it once the car is over 40 mph or so. Wondering what I might be looking at for repairs.

The AC hasn't worked in about 5 years. Do you think it could still be causing an issue?

could be a pulley going going bad or the bendix on the starter is getting stuck and hitting the flywheel if the starter it needs to be shimmed
