My cars trunk is getting hot

Asked by Bryon Apr 19, 2018 at 07:02 AM about the 2001 Pontiac Grand Am GT

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car started to idle low and slow to start but
once it gets out of 1st it's fine. A code went up and
said it is misfiring. There was a smell on the way
home that smelt like burning plastic and
coolant/the car was running hot. I checked and the
car wasn't running hot.  But while I was getting
stuff out of the trunk I found a bag that was melted
I touched where the bag was and it was extremely
warm. I think it has something to do with the
exhaust  cause it was just the one spot. I
appreciate any help and thank you

Exhaust temps are hot but they should not be melting things in the trunk. Was the spot directly over the exhaust pipe in the trunk area? Were you carrying any batteries in the bag or is your car battery also in the trunk? (Shorting across battery terminals will also be a source of heat - even 9 Volt batteries if their terminals are shorted together.)
