Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I drive a 02 pontiac grand am se. It has 168k miles
on it. The transaxle starts banging gears and
slipping ears when the car gets up to temp. It
doesnt do this all the time. I think its the transaxle

Check the fluid for proper level and condition , it should be nice and pink . That tranny is 20 years old and has probably seen better days .

It's most likely the shift solenoids. But a GM transmission with 168,000 miles on it is about done. The next thing to go will be overdrive and TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) lock in. Having the transmission repaired or replaced will cost more than the vehicle is worth. Hope that helps! Jim

Had the same thing happen on my Dad's car, and it did turn out to be the transmission itself, got a reman unit and problem cured.
