2003 climet control turn on heat from cold and it take a day or so to change

The HVAC unit uses vacuum to open and close doors that control the heat. The heater core is always hot if coolant is flowing. The temperature control closes a door that lets cold air bypass the heater core. Check to see if you have vacuum to the control panel.
