Are you able to start the car without putting the key in? Sounds like an electrical problem at the base of the steering column. I've had similar problems in the past. I believe there's a lock solenoid of some sort that has to activate for the ignition switch to work properly. The wires at the base of the steering column can break internally from movement. Can be a bit challenging to find. I believe GM has issued some service bulletins on the subject according to my mechanic.
