1998 Grand Prix 3.8 sc starts, runs for a minute and dies

Asked by Amberp6001 Apr 11, 2017 at 03:27 AM about the 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix 2 Dr GTP Supercharged Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Was running (seemingly) fine, then died
while driving. Started up but ran really
rough and died within 20 seconds. Brand
new coils, spark plugs and wires, fuel filter,
and fuel pump. Starts and runs for about a
minute now before running rough, stalling
and dying. Any thoughts? Help??

I would have the crankshaft sensor and the ignition control module tested at an auto parts store. The ICM is spendy so definitely would want to know if it is good or not. The crankshaft sensor, not so much.

Thank you for the thoughts. Replaced the crankshaft sensor and tested ICM and nothin, same problems

Then next is to check for vacuum leaks, and snug up the intake manifold bolts especially.

Found the problem. It's a fuel pump resistor. One of the very very few cars that has this part and it's apparently a common problem with them. Thanks for the help, I appreciate it :)
