99 Grand Prix GT 3.8

Asked by littlelisa1799 Mar 29, 2022 at 03:07 PM about the 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix 4 Dr GT Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

This car sat for over a year. When I started
driving it again it ran rough. Replaced plugs.
Better for a week or so. Ran codes, cylinder 2
misfire. Bought wires, coil, air filter, fuel filter and
on the way home with new parts, the rough got
worse, car sputtered and died. As it did, it got
louder like exhaust came apart. Upon
inspection, sure enough pipe separated from cat
converter. But now it won’t crank, just clicks. Oil
is clean and full, never overheated.  Only
185,000 on this 3.8.  Charging battery right now
to see if it will crank. I hoped my exhaust guy
would have an answer. He says unrelated and
coincidental. I’m stumped. Help please!!

if the battery is charged and the cables are all tight then it could be the starter , I would think the solenoid wire is getting juice because of the the clicks , I would check those fuel injectors too

Battery at 100% and still won’t crank. I think it would be mighty coincidental for starter to go out same time as car stopped running. Never any starter problems before. I’m afraid misfire has caused internal damage. Going to have to see if motor will turn by hand. Not feeling very optimistic.

Yes So motor turned by hand will only go a short ways then gets hung up. So going to replace motor. Can I put an 04 GP GT 3800 into my 99 GP GT with same?
