I have had this happen on a BMW when the BMW tumbler device started to go bad. It's not an expensive fix if it is your case, and just have to remove the steering column covers behind the steering wheel. This will especially be the case if, when you try to turn the car on/off, you don't feel the clicks or stops at certain points--it just spins in an unusual fashion. A car can still run for a bit without its battery disconnected if it was running already (just won't start).
