2002 Pontiac Grand Prix, shifting

Asked by TonyS7 Feb 13, 2020 at 11:52 AM about the 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix GT Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix, with a 3.8 liter engine and an automatic transmission.  When it shifts to a higher gear (it is most noticeable from first to second), and I am going fairly slowly with a low RPM, after it shifts, I start to lurch a little bit until my speed gets higher.  It also stops lurching if I take my foot off the gas pedal.  What might be causing this, and roughly how much might this cost me ?

Ed, what are you talking about? How can he shift at a higher point? It's an automatic. It shifts when the electronics tell it to shift. So yes... could be an electronic problem. Sounds a lot more like a plugged catalytic converter to me though. Could also be badly worn out spark plugs. (I speak from personal experience here.) Its easy to forget about them these days and then suddenly realize they haven't been changed in a decade. I thought my transmission was going too, then new plugs... new car. Lesson learned.

No problem. You didn't offend. You just weren't making sense. And of course what you couldn't see was that I was smiling when I wrote my reply.
