2004 Pontiac Grand Prix Trans Problems

Asked by hannah5711 Nov 07, 2014 at 12:32 PM about the 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GT2

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2004 model grand prix. 155,000 miles. daily driver.
Started a few months ago. It would run hot and shift hard going from 1st to 2nd, then 2nd to 3rd, but not 3rd to 4th. If I park and turn it off, it wouldn't do it anymore. Lately, it has done it more often. Also seems to 'slip' from lower gears (or not catching-not sure how to explain it). My dad fixed the overheating problem a couple of months ago, but the car stills shifts hard ever so often (not every time I drive it). No other problems with it. everything else works fine. Any suggestions?

Yes, I have a suggestion. Take it to a transmission shop and get it diagnosed right away. Transmission problems don't go away or heal themselves with time. They only get worse. Transmissions are grossly expensive to repair or rebuild so if you can head off a problem before it gets worse you will likely save a ton of money.

if you scan the car you most likely have a P1811 code set (maximum adapt long shift) this sets and gives you the harsh shift as the computer defaults to maximum line pressure and removes any shift adapts ( a slower application of the clutches to improve shift feel) most times this happen because the pressure control solenoid is jamming a common problem in the 4-t65-e trans, the trans is most likely fine and the pc solenoid just needs to be replaced
