I hate Grand Prix

Asked by Rich2010 May 10, 2018 at 03:03 PM about the 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix GT

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car was driving fine but when I pulled into a
parking space and reversed to straighten up I
couldn't go forward all of a sudden! I had to drive
home in gear 2 and eventually had to drive home in
gear 1. What went wrong?

Yes, sounds like you'll be needing a transmission Spend wisely grasshopper. It's a 13 year old car and its only a GT. It's easy to spend way more than the car is worth. Get it checked out to make sure its not something minor, but be prepared to go car shopping.

Mine is 17 years old. Transmission was just replaced. None of the gauges, including gas, oil, steering fluid, etc work. if I could set this car on fire I would happily watch it burn. Husband keeps putting money into this case. It sits in the driveway taking up space, unsafe at any speed. Steering went up yesterday, delightful experience. Worst car I have ever owned. I hate it.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience. This does sound like a car that should have been laid to rest instead of spending money on a transmission. Hopefully it wasn't thousands. Is it a high miler? The electircal issues sound like they are coming from one source. All electrical connections, grounds, and the wiring in general need a careful inspection and components need to be tested. Find a shop that specializes in automotive electrical and have them identify the problem. It's not something most do it yourselfers are equipped to do. If the steering has truly failed its either the pump or the steering rack. Troubleshoot first and then replace things, not the other way around. And of course don't overlook the obvious... make sure it has enough fluid in the reservoir. That may be all that's wrong. If you can get those two things fixed, and in light of the fact that the transmission is done, you've probably got a car you can enjoy for a few more years if you stay on top of oil changes and minor repairs and drive it nicely.
