Grand prix having trouble starting after possibly running out of gas

Asked by Bri May 22, 2018 at 07:22 PM about the 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix GT

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Gas light came on when got home last week, no biggy. Well
the next morning it was all of a sudden on E, I swear.
Risked it to make it to work(4 miles away and always
across from nearest gas station) and it stalled out less
than a mile from home. Got gas, tried to start it like an idiot
without priming it and it started after a few  tries then
backed fired and stalled. Called a tow later that day just for
it to start up right after then. Drove it straight to my
mechanic just for it to run just fine for him for 2 days so
unable to diagnose. Picked it up drove to walmart just for it
to start doing it again. It turns over but just doesnt seem to
be getting enough gas. I listen for a fuel pump and dont
think I could hear it. An angel of a dude sprayed some
starter fluid into my air filter and with a little but of that, a
few tries and a rap on the gas I got it started to get back to
the mechanic. What do you think it is? Fuel pump? Fuel
filter? Bad fuse? Is it gonna cost me my savings??

Sorry Tom I meant tap on the gas and it started. Although I have had an issue where I have to tap on gas half of the time to get it to start but couldnt find a reason as to why. I've had that issue for a couple years now.
