Wheels and tires

Asked by bryanblake Aug 05, 2013 at 08:28 PM about the 1996 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe RWD

Question type: General

I have a 1996 Corvette that has stock wheels. 17x8.5 front and 17x9.5 rear. The recommended tires are 255/45-17. front and 285/40-17. I have an oppurtunity to buy nicer wheels that are 18x8.5 front and 19v10 rear. The recommended tires are 245/40-18 front and 285/35-19 rear. Will the different wheels and tires work on my car? Will the change affect the way the car handles or affect the speedometer. Would there be any other negative ramifications?

stick to the size specified on the doorjamb...anything else will be incorrect and not engineered to handle the alternate size in terms of action, wheel speed...and handling...I would not insure a car that had an incorrect size wheel on it...there is a reason why this exact size has been specified...do not divert from it....thanks~

As "Judge_Roy" has said, Stick to the drivers door "VIN" sticker information on tire sizes. NEGATIVE - The larger rims will come with a tire with a smaller (lower) sidewall and a stiffer ride. Without knowing the overall diameter differences of the two rear tires, the larger tires "could" throw off the speedo and cruise control. Stick to the OEM tires and save your money for cruising fuel !
