1992 subaru legacy strange noise

when I drive my car there is a high piched sound comeing from motor or transmission it almost sounds like a bearing or a u-joint that is bone dry and needs lube or something can you help me with this bizar noise?

If it is coming from the front of the engine then I would suspect the idler wheel on the fan belt or possibly one of the cam belt idler wheels. If it is a cam belt idler wheel get it fixed immediately. How long has it been since the last timing belt change?
