Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Considering purchasing a 1996 Legacy 2.2 wagon.
Car runs and drives great and has no rust. Cost of
purchase of car is 750$. The major mechanical
problem isca major oil leak. From the back/
bottom of engine and its dripping on the exhaust.I
was told it was a seal. What is the cost of repairing
this. Does the engine need to be removed?

I would pass as the cost to repair will probably end up being a couple of grand for a mechanic to do it. The head gaskets are probably also leaking.

What someone tells you is wrong, and what is actually wrong, may be two different things, you won't know until you start working on it. If you *really* want an old Subaru project car, great, but if you're really looking for cheap reliable transportation I would avoid this one.

Ken has a good point. People lie or they are ignorant which is why I always stay away from cars "that just need this one little thing fixed".
