Do I need to replace my catalytic converter??

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 Subaru Legacy GT Limited with 160,000 miles on it.  Recently, my check
engine light came on so I took it to the shop.  The mechanic said my catalytic converter
need to be replaced, which would cost me $1000.  Is it worth replacing on this old of a
car?  I bought the car for $2300 so it seems like a pretty big investment, relatively
speaking.  If I can get 20,000 more miles out of it without replacing it, then it would seem
pointless to do so.  I just don't know how vital this repair is.  I'd appreciate any feedback.

Lets just say if converter gets partially clogged the first thing you will notice is loss of power vehicle not going over a certain speed and if it gets totally clogged vehicle will not start. Now as far as how long you have before you actually need a new one that I can not tell you.

Thanks guys! If I find time to get a second opinion, I'll be sure to ask him what the check engine light code is and I'll start a new thread with all the new info.

nah, just bring it back here.. No need for a new thread. That way Tom and firebird get notified (pending their settings) that you replied with more info. Just my 2c. Kind regards,

If the cat is bad you will lose power, the engine may run hotter and you also may lose gas mileage. Once the converter starts going bad it will get worse to the point where the car won't drive. You can get a second opinion but if it is bad do go ahead and replace it. Your car will pass the next smog check with flying colors!

The catalytic converter on my 2001 Subaru Legacy L was hanging down, scraping on pavement. Drove it to shop. They said need new converters, that pipe broke. I said can't you just hang it back up. They said converters (2) were too beat up from it dragging on ground. I had family in the hospital and had no time so I took their word for it. Got the old parts back. Pipe broken near flange, no long pipe in between flange and converter. Both catalytic converts were fine, not beat up, dented, anything wrong. Could shop have welded the short area from flange to converter?

Quick question... I just recently changed my catalytic converter but didn't put the springs can that effect the cat?

Leave out parts and then wonder if you will have problems. Good idea - NOT!
