my friend is selling his 2000 Subaru Outback for $5350...I took it to a mechanic and it looks like there are repairs (brakes, water pump, head gaskets, brake racks, etc)...that will add up to over $1200...at least....I'm not sure what offer to make that is reasonable considering all the repairs...it is automatic and has 121000 miles on it.

I would say $4500, if your friend has a problem with it let him know what the shop found (get a printout from the shop if needed) a friend should be able to accept that.
Give him the option to fix all of the things that need addressed before the sale, or subtract the price of the repairs from the selling price. Either way it is going to have to be done, and if they are known issues it becomes the burden of the seller.
Take the average market value for the car (example: edmunds.com), minus known needed repairs = Selling price.
I got my subie 2001 subie for $950.00 so far i have put a new timing belt, camshat seal, new valve cover gasket and water pump about $700.00 so far , and it also looks like ai may have to do a headgasket the car has 197000 miles on it and I am not sure if i should do a headgasket or not
