Perhaps this will help but I am not sure about the reverse issue. http://mdhmotors.com/subaru-fwd-fuse-information/

Look into the reverse solenoid, you may want to talk to a transmission shop that knows older Subaru's. http://etereman.com/blog/subaru-transmission/how-to-diagnose-a-faulty-solenoid- in-the-4eat-automatic-transmission

Thankyou very much for responding...the car has no drive in ANY gear just wondering if it's possible to be electrical or likely to be mechanical? There was no warning signs after owner drove 10 kms home with rear driveshaft disconnected he then tried to reverse into work shop and it just let go

It would help if you gave all the information up front. Your original post made it sound like you had no reverse. Do like Olds says and find a used 4EAT for your car.
