First I would check for loose or dirty battery connections. Then test alternator output. It should be around 14 volts. These things may cause those lights to come on at same time.

If the battery icon lights up, it means the your battery is not being charged, the battery may be perfectly good but alternator, regulator a cable not making good contact, including the other end of Black Neg-- cable where it grounds. Now the brake icon may possibly be your parking brake not fully disengaged, or fluid in master cylinder low.

I read that on these models,. the Brake light(Parking) will always come on with the Gen(Batt) light. Which made me feel quite relieved, as when I saw it, I was imagining untraceable wiring problems, lol.

It sounds like the power steering belt which charges the battery is becoming bad or has broken. It happened to me today.

My 97 outback just did the same thing. Battery light and brake light came on while driving. I tested the voltage output of the alternator. It was barely 12v. Checked battery terminals and wires for corrosion, they looked good. Checked screw on connection at the top of the alternator. Found it very corroded. Disconnected it and cleaned the cable end and terminal with a small wire brush and brake clean. Reconnected and retested. Voltage output at 13.5v now.
