Exhaust metal sound?

Asked by MrPanda Feb 24, 2018 at 06:27 PM about the 2002 Subaru Outback Limited

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2002 subaru outback sedan and when I accelerate under 25 mph, I
hear this weird metal sound coming from what I believe is the exhaust in the
front. Almost like a crinkling sound, but if you are out of the car it is very loud.
I'm at work right now so I can't show you a picture.

I forgot to mention this, but if you pass the 25 mph mark, the sound can't be heard because I believe that its just a plate of metal that is heavily vibrating.

Yes - Heat shield is the most likely culprit.

FOR is correct again! If the shields are very secure but simply rattling either clamp them tighter or bang in a nail or screw to bind the noisy corner or end-gap. After several more years they might loosen enough to just twist off. Easy, but annoying repair.
