I have a 1995 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4x4 that won't engage in Reverse at times

Asked by kmm4runner Jan 12, 2015 at 04:14 PM about the 1995 Toyota 4Runner 4 Dr SR5 V6 4WD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I go to put it in reverse and it won't engage. I'll have to turn off my truck and let it sit for about 30 minutes and then go out and start it and let it warm up for 10 minutes. Most of the time it will engage at the second attempt. But then sometimes it'll go into Drive and then my truck will drive rough for about 5 minutes.. Need to figure this out asap. Thanks

you are very low on transmission fluid or you need to service it. the filter might be clogged and straining to pick up the fluid. it is an simple job only take about half an hour and 6 quirts of toyota transmission fluid can't stress this enough don't get the oil from autozone or any place like that. it is expensive but it is what the car requires or your transmission will fail believe me i made that mistake and paid dearly for it.!!

I had a similar issue where it wouldn't down shift in forward gears and it had the slipping effect. I dropped the transmission pan changed oil filter and flushed it out at external cooler line until clean oil came out and changed the solenoids since they looked original and cooked and it ran very good for about a year then it started slipping in reverse every now and then. Most of the time f I let it warm up and put it in gear it is a solid hook up when it engages and dosent slip. My oil levels was where it should be when cold and hot so Im back to square one trying to figure it out
