How many miles will a 2001 4Runner be good for?

Hello claysanddoz-- That's a tough question to answer. The Toyota 4Runner will perform well for a long, long time. It's in the genes. Based on that you would think that this car has only reached half of its lifespan. But, the question really is how has it been maintained? First, run a Carfax. Has it been in an accident. See if the previous owner has service records. Bring it to a mechanic you trust and get a complete "physical". If all sounds good after you have done your research, go for it. I have a 69 Corolla with over 600,000 miles on it, keep up with them and they will last. The major thing you need to check is if the timing belt was replaced at around 60,000 miles.

That 4Runner is considered just broken in! I have personally owned 3 4Runners, all have been great! Take care of it, 270-300k easy!

Here is a little FYI for you about the 3.4L in the 4Runner you are looking at....TRD (Toyota Racing Development) made a supercharger for that motor and and the supercharger is good for 200k miles............Good service is key to long motor life. My aunt has a '98 4Runner and has the same concerns as you, but her's has 229k miles and going strong!

the motor will tend to last longer than the trans on those cars. you're still safe with proper maint. up to 300k miles, you may start to see some transmission issues around 200k miles...

My 1998 4runner 4x4 has the 3.4, and it still shifted perfect and crisp, and the engine didn't smoke, no noise, and didn't use any oil even after 281,000 miles. Maintenance is absolutely everything. even the timing belt lasted 280k miles and still didnt break but i changed it finally because i felt bad. Only thing I did to it was change 1 rear wheel bearing, and all the pulleys on the front of the motor and the radio besides regular maintenance like tires and brakes. KEY THING IS TO KEEP ALL FLUIDS FRESH. OIL CHANGE EVERY 3K, CHANGE ALL OTHER FLUIDS EVERY 50K INCLUDING TRANS FLUID, FRONT AND REAR DIFFERENTIAL FLUIDS, TRANSFER CASE FLUID, COOLANT POWER STEERING AND BRAKE FLUID FLUSH. I sold my 4unner with 281k miles and new owners drove it 7 hrs home with no problems.

Hiya! My 01 toyota 4 runner has 144K and still going strong. It's all about maintenance, maintenance, maintenance. I stopped going to the "Stealers" long time ago and have trusted many a good mechanic besides doing alot of stuff myself. Not bad for a GIRL, heh?! Just took it out for some light 4WDing and she performed like the Champ she is. Most guys drool over my truck once they gave her the once over, their eyes glaze over and most of them ask, are you by chance selling her?! NOPE! My 2000 4Runner will hit 250k miles next week :) I'm the original owner. Change the oil and keep up on maintenance and they will last a long long time.

2000 4Runner here with 414,xxx miles and counting!! Still runs great!

Lookin at buyin at 2001 4Runner with about 125K on it for around 7k. They have taken good care of it and will give us all the history of the 4Runner to show their good work. Is the price right? We live in a small mountain town in Idaho and our small nissan sentra ends up in the ditch 75% of the winter so we are looking for either a truck or something that can haul and of course can do better in snowy/icy conditions. Any thoughts? Is the price right for this 4Runner?

01 4runner, 325k mi, original engine and transmission with no work done. Timing belt @324k mi, cleaned throttle body and mass air flow sensor. Transfer case seals and valve gasket replaced due to deterioration over time. It runs better now than ever before. KEEP UP WITH MAINTENANCE!!! Use quality parts.

1998 4Runner SR5 4WD. Everything works. Doesn't leak. 300K. Runs and drives great. Should easily reach 400K+. I'm looking forward to 500K+!

2001 4Runner SR5 Sport 4WD. Still runs like a champ. Just talked to my mechanic about what to do to keep it running a long time. He said that the valves should be adjusted at some point, but he encountered no drivability issues. I'm original owner and have always been diligent about maintenance - a must for any car.

336000 on mine with original engine . changed the timing belt and a sensory (I think that's what it's called I don't know cars :)) and that's been the only major replacements . my dad pounded in my head when I first got my runner 13 years ago to get my oil changed everytime and I have . I do have a oil leak and I add high mileage oil about once a month. I drove back and forth from Orlando to SC MANY times when I was in Grad school and presently my job requires lots of travel in my own vehicle. I drive really hard & my runner is still going strong , I honestly think it could be a spokes car for Toyotta. truly best quality vehicle ever made .

My 4runner has 361000 at the moment all original with the exception of routine maintenance.

I have a 1998 4runner. 312,000 miles. towed a 23 ft. airstream for over 30,000 miles with it too. Original engine. Original tranny. Just maintenance and tuneups except had to replace the harmonic balancer because it got loose and the keyway got messed up. The crank keyway was still fine. Fluids replaced regularly and timing belt/water pump every 100,000. I bought it with 152,000 miles. The suspension was sagging some in the back so I gave it Old Man Emu suspension and ARB bumper for deer. It now goes 6000 miles between oil changes with synthetic oil and at 6000 miles the oil is still full and completely clean. I am currently replacing the leather on the drivers seat. I also gave it new wheels, tires, and weather tech mats to continue to keep her clean inside. I'm figure at least another 300,000 miles.

Well of course I've used a fair number of sets of tires and done brakes 2 or 3 times. Still drives like new... well with the old man emu suspension it's actually better than new still at 312,000 miles!

2002 4Runner with 261k. Purchased it in 07 with 105k miles. Have replaced spark plugs and wires twice and radiator and a few other minor things. I drive it long distance (1100 miles )every couple of months. Agree that maintenance is key but with little $ and time invested I have decided to drive it to the wheels fall off as it has been an absolute beast and the best car I've ever owned. I'd like to purchase a newer one but am hesitant if the newer models will yield the same mileage and low cost/DIY maintenance. Are the newer models capable of this kind of return on investment?

What about the tire pressure indicators, five including spare, costco says evry 50 k miles...?

2004 4Runner just turned 302 139 everything original except like everyone says brakes oil tranny tires etc etc think I'm done buying anything- -but Toyotas

I have 280k and some change and it runs great. No signs of issues with engine or trans. Like most say here, preventative maintenance is key. Full synthetic oil, etc, dont skimp on fluids. Amazing vehicle, bought mine with 150k and have been driving it for 10 years!

2007 4 runner with 4.7 liter V8 with X-REAS, all I did was just oil change and timing belt change, some bulbs needed replacing. It has 280,000 miles on it, never miss a beat. I don't know how to kill this thing.................

I have a 2006 V8. Replacing front axles but haven't spent much of anything except fluid changes for the past 2 years. Just now hitting 200k. Going to get a new one this year and one of my kids is taking this to haul their work kit around in.

That baby should just now be getting broken in!! Bought a 2008 SR5 in 2011 with approx. 50k miles. I only use Castrol GTX since I was 19, and change the Oil AND FILTER....every 3000 miles. Switch out the transmission fluid and filter, and the rear axle gear oil at about 70,000. I now have 209,000 miles on the best 4 wheel drive vehicle I have ever owned. (GMC suburban, Chevy Blazer, Ford (original explorer), 3 Jeeps (never again). My '08 runs just like it did the day it came from the factory, with no major repairs, only maintenance. I finally replaced the original shocks at about 107,000 miles, and the stainless steel exhaust is still intact (although the baffles are just beginning to sound a little "throaty") Take good care of your vehicle, repair anything that breaks, and don't be afraid to take it over rougher terrain than just the speed bumps in the Mall parking lot. As soon as Toyota realizes that they messed up when they took the lids and doors off of all the rear storage compartments.....I'll be buying another one...Only this time it will be the TRD Premium. (still not on the 2020)

I have a 2002 Toyota 4 Runner and it's still running great!!! THANK GOD! It has 450,00 plus miles! It's a very great vehicle, it has the original engine and transmission. And it still looks good!!! I still get my oil changes and tune ups...good gas mileage too. It's still running 4 me.

2002 4runner with 215K....replaced timing belt at 90K...and again at 200K. Only use all Toyota parts for this. Replace all the belts and water pump at this time. I did add a transmission cooler. Trans temp now runs about 150F all the time. I do full synthetic oil changes every 5K and use Toyota or Wix filters. Trans drain and fill every 30K. Suspension has been replaced twice, i have a 3" lift and run 285 75 16 tires. I upgraded to Tundra rotors. Sway bar bushings and links have been replaced. All hoses have been replaced. I have a ScanGauge II to track my temps and mileage. Still average 22.3 mpg on highway. I have also sanded and repainted my framerails, and coat them with cosmoline each fall...midwest salt sucks. Fully expect to get to 400K.
