2002 Toyota 4Runner: The end of the starter has come off and is lodged in the flywheel. How do you get this loose?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We have a 2002 Toyota 4Runner 2WD Automatic. The starter end has broken and remains in the flywheel when the starter was removed. It is so wedged that we can't get the flywheel to turn so we can free the broken piece. Any suggestion?

Did the gear come off the starter shaft or did the starter brake off in the gear ? I can not even count how many times I have seen this happen to other cars and trucks Did the end cup with the starter gear come off the end of the starter broken off Is the windings still there are did it brake off ? You have a lot of work I wish that I could see it I know one thing it will take some work you will more than likely have to drop the trans to get it apart to let come out
