Was working, now isn't.  If not wiring, then what?

OK. As I suspected. But . . . should I try cleaning it first, 'tis a bit 'o grunge in there.

Usually the problem is the fuse, but it could be the socket. If you clean it out do NOT use anything metal that will short it out.

OK. And I assume liquid cleaners are verboten as well?

Maybe a rag slightly moistened with the cleaner of your choice and a finger or pencil or similar. If you are concerned about shorting something out then pull the fuse or disconnect the battery prior to cleaning. Disconnecting the battery (just 1 terminal is necessary) might be the best choice.
