when to change breaks, are ther break warning light

my Avalon has 38,000 miles , everything working fine, had oil change and dealer told me I need to change rear breaks usually front breaks go first, don't understand why rear breaks need repalcemet my question is are there warnning light that let me know I need to replace breaks? Also I was told to replace timing belt and per Avalon manual it suppose to last 90,000 miles. Am I being taken for a ride?

Hi jboch, I would say you need to find yourself another dealership/mechanic. Unless you do most of your driving in reverse, your front pads will wear out long before the rear - they may last twice as long depending on driving habits. As for the timing belt, if it's supposed to last 90k I would probably wait until about 75k before even worrying about it. This dealership sounds like a total scam! Hope this helps!
if you dont service your brakes,thay can clog up with brake dust,and stop them from working correctly,eg not releasing and thus slowly wearing then away. as far as your cam belt goes,it doesnt have to get to the advised milage before it needs changing,it depends on the age of the vehicle to,in your service book it may say,replace at 90,000 or every 3 years,what ever comes first,i would allso advise if you do get it changed,to get a cam belt kit not just a cam belt,the kit usualy contains pullys ajusters or both,dont leave it to chance,if the belt snaps it will damage your engine,and that will cost you a lot. ...Dave
