Asked by Lori May 27, 2018 at 09:11 AM about the 1992 Toyota Camry XLE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Car was running good. Shut it off for less
than 5 mins. Got back in and the rpms jump
and it didn't stay running unless I stay on the
gas. Made it home. 4 hours later started it
and the check engine light and overdrive off
light are flashing it won't stay running if I
don't stay on the gas at least a little bit.
What causes this? Where do I start?

You are having a misfire. Since your car is a 1992, you need to have someone with a OBD I scanner hook up to your car to grab the codes.

Could it be the distributor cap? I can't keep it running so I can't go have it hooked up and tested for the codes.

My last issue has changed....the car runs and stays running without a problem now but, it now randomly(more times than not) will not down shift all the way and the over drive off light will start flashing as soon as I slow down and it doesn't downshift or it will come on as soon as I put it in drive after starting it. It will continue to flash at the slow steady pace until I turn the car off. Any suggestions on where to begin to fix this issue? It's happening almost every time I slow down the first time in drive...It's gone from randomly a hand full of times a month to every time I go anywhere. Do I just need to replace the transmission?
