Consider a Throttle Body and IAC cleaning and service. Also a large VACUUM leak would cause a high Idle. Follow the Vacuum Diagram decal under the hood. Get back to us with results.

I DID FIND A VACUUM LEAK REPLACED THE HOSE AND NOW I'M GETTING A CODE 42 VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR STILL ALONE WITH THE HIGH IDLE, I REMOVED THE VSS AND NOTICE THAT IT WAS DRY INSIDE SHOULD'NT THERE BE FLUID THERE? I'M IN THE PROCESS OF CHANGING THE Vacuum Switching Valve SOLENOID. LET ME KNOW IF I'M ON THE RIGHT TRACK. THANKS AGAIN

VSS? That would be the Vehicle Speed Sensor?? I do not see a relationship between that sensor and the High Idle you describe. Keep going through the many Vacuum hoses you have on this vehicle...and checking their location against the Decal under the Hood. Some of those hoses may be mixed up. Does this engine have a PCV Valve...or...a PVC Restriction system?

WELL I REMOVED THE VAC SWITCHING VALE CONNECTED TWO WIRES TO IT AND TO THE BATTERY TO SEE IF I HEAR IT CLICK AND THERE WAS NO CLICK DOES THIS MEAN THAT THIS PART NEEDS TO BE REPLACED? THANKS

DOES ANYONE HAVE THE VACUUM ROUTING DIAGRAM FOR THE 1993 TOYOTA CAMRY 4 CYL (CALIF. EMISSION) THANKS

That vacuum switching valve may have a Pos. and a Neg. terminal. Connecting it across a battery backwards might damage it. However...if it does not activate(click)...my guess is it's bad. Which VSV is this? EGR....Purge?? Regarding a Vacuum Diagram...there should be one factory installed underr the Hood. Might be near the radiator...might be on the underside of the Hood.

I TRACE THE VACUUM HOSE FROM THE MAP SENSOR TO THE AIR CONTROL VALE ( I LOOK IT UP AND IT'S BEEN CALLED THE POWER STEERING AIR CONTROL VALE ) AND THIS IS WHERE I GET A CHANGE IN THE MOTOR, WHEN REMOVED IDLES DOWN A LITTLE ROUGH WHEN RECONNECT IDLES HIGH COULD THIS BE THE ISSUE ? TO CLARIFY ONE HOSE RUNS FROM THE MAP SENSOR TO THIS UNIT AND TO THE Vacuum Switching Valve SOLENOID ALSO I DID A CHECK ON THE VACUUM SOLENOID AND I DID NOT GET A CLICKING SOUND FROM THE UNIT. AT THIS POINT I'M NOT GETTING ANY CODES. THANKS IN ADVANCE

30

OH I FORGOT TO ADD THAT THIS AIR CONTROL VALE HAS A 15/16 BOLT HEAD. THANKS

In order to help you any further I need to be at your side....or....we need a Vacuum Diagram to follow. I'll see if I can find one on line.

The SOURCE for vacuum to the Map sensor is something Toyota calls a "Gas Filter". What this really is....is a fitting on the intake manifold with a screen in it. This Fitting feeds vacuum to the Map Sensor....and...the fuel pressure regulator. Both of these items could be causing your issue. I would be inclined to pull one hose at a time at the "Gas Filter" with the engine running and check to see if you have a good vacuum. A vacuum gauge would be nice. You should see 18-22" Hg. Pull the hose off of the Fuel Pressure regulator. Does it smell like gas? Is the inside of the hose wet with fuel? Bad FP Reg. That Map sensor could also cause problems. You need a Vacuum Pump in order to check that out.

21,980

BTW...if you Google 1993 Toyota Vacuum Diagrams...you will see a reference to a PDF file. Open her up and you will find that Vac Diag.

21,980

Another memory flash back. See if your engine has a Idle Up Valve". this device Kicks up the idle when the AC is on. Maybe the computer thinks the AC is on all the time? Or...the VSV is bad. Get back with results.

30

I HAVE CHANGE THE VACUUM SWITCHING SOLENOID VALE AND I STILL HAVE THE HIGH IDLE, MY NEXT THING TO DO IS TO CHANGE OUT THE POWER STEERING AIR CONTROL VALE THIS IS WHERE I GET THE CHANGE IN THE IDLE OF THE CAR, IF THIS DOSEN'T WORK YOUR GUESS IS AS GOOD AS MINE... THANKS

21,980

Old School......when we suspected a vacuum control device was bad...and was causing a vacuum leak....which would cause a high idle.....we would systematically pinch off one vac. line at a time. Idle changes???....that's were the problem is. Just another flash back.

21,980

Had another flash back concerning this Vacuum issue. Check and see if you have a "Vacuum Tree"....with many vac. hoses attached. I seem to remember such a device located near the thermostat housing. This device switches Vac to various components when Engine Temp goes from cold to hot. If those hoses are in the wrong place on that "TREE"....you got yourself a strange running Toyota.

6,170

What's new? Hopefully you have resolved the issue with this vehicle?

30

Hey Tony, Thanks for checking in well the situation still exists, I have change everything in my thread i have posted i have just change the vacuum switching vale thinking that would be the answer but not so the next thing i will try is to switch out the power steering air control vale or (gas filter) as some may call it. I have narrow it down to the map sensor to the air control vale (gas filter). As for now I'M SCRATCHING MY HEAD IN WONDER. THANKS AGAIN

Check the hose going to the Map Sensor. If it feels soft and mushy....change it. Also...smell it. If it smells like gas ....that's NG. You might have a bad Map Sensor.

30

Just went back to working on this car, i'm still having the high idle i had a code 42 and I pulled the EFI fuse and it reset no codes as of now. i'm looking at changing out the gas filter on the intake manifold but before I do, do any of you think this could be my problem ? also everyone has been very helpful in their suggestions but i thought this was something i could do myself in my spare time you know like a quick do it yourself kind of thing, i have narrow it down to where the connection to the map sensor to the gas filter on the manifold i have tried two other map sensors plus the one that was on the vehicle could they all be bad ? i got them from a salvage yard. GOT ANY COMMENTS I'D LIKE TO HERE THEM. Thanks

Hello Everyone, I forgot to add that my speedometer and my cruise control are not working.

21,980

GAS FILTER...I agree.....When you remove that "Gas Filter" give it a good visual inspection. Inside...there might be a SCREEN(filter)...which may be partially blocked with a CARBON like material...... inspect all vac. hoses attached.. Replace them.....they are cheap...but...you must purchase the correct hose....designated for fuel and emissions. Any Vac Hose which is soft and mushy/hard/cracked...replace. When that "Filter" becomes occluded it reduces vac. supply to the map sensor. That reduced Vac. tells the sensor the vehicle is under load and effects the idle. Get back with results.

30

Thanks ( I couldn't believe the price of that unit $60) if you know of a cheaper price get back with me.

21,980

$60.00 "Gas Filter"? ...ridiculous. Consider removing the old one and using Carb. Cleaner ...soak it....and see if you can clear that screen inside with compressed air.

30

Can anyone give me their take on while the speedometer and my cruise control are not working, i don't have any codes. Thanks Again

21,980

That code 42 you logged is a Vehicle Speed Sensor issue. Could be the sensor which is usually located in the trans. Could be a wiring issue....could be a Computer issue. That's why your speedo and CC do not function. I believe it is a separate issue we can deal with once you have this engine running correctly.

30

I HAVE A CODE 42 (VSS) NOW, WITH THE O/D FLASHING ON THE DASH BOARD, CLUSTER PANEL OUT ALONG WITH THE SPEEDO AND CRUISE CONTROL, I PLACE AN ORDER FOR A VSS SENSON ONLINE ALSO IS THERE ANOTHER UNIT THAT CONTROLS THE SHIFTING OF THE TRANS ? I'M NOT GETTING FULL ACCELERATION . THANKS

21,980

There might be a separate computer controlling the shift of the Tranny. Further research required. Did you ever find the ultimate fox for the High idle?

BTW....another memory flashback. Look at your air intake into intake manifold. Do you have "Air Vane Sensor" ...looks like a flapper door to the intake?

30

NO I'VE NOT SEEN THIS ITEM ALSO WHERE IT SEEMS LIKE A SENSOR MIGHT GO ON THE MASS AIRFLOW COVER THERE'S JUST A HOLE THERE...

21,980

Well...I'm afraid I an now "Lost in the Sauce". Can you provide a picture of the Engine in this vehicle? Look under the hood and see if there is a engine ID Label with the Engine Code displayed. There seems to be several parts missing from this Engine.

The VSS sensor is on the dashboard end of the speedometer cable.. inside the speedometer ..it looks like a mouse wheel with led/phototransistor coupler.

30

HELLO ALL.... I HAVE THE HIGH IDLE DWN. BY ADJUSTING THE THROTTLE BODY CABLES AND THE TPS IT'S RUNNING BETTER BUT I STILL HAVE THE CODE 42 VSS SENSOR, I REPL THE VSS AND I STILL HAVE THE CODE 42 WITH O/D FLASHING ON THE DASHBOARD. THE TRANS IS NOT SHIFTING RIGHT WHEN TAKING OFF BUT AS I PICK UP SPEED IT'S CHANGING LIKE IT SHOULD I'M THINKING IT'S HAVING TO DO WITH THE CODE 42. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD TRY? OH BY THE WAY I DID FIND THE SENSOR TO THE AIR INTAKE HIDING BETWEEN SOME OTHER WIRES. THANKS AGAIN...

21,980

OK...good job. Now...I know you replaced the VSS....but....replacement parts are NOT always good parts. Time to check to see if the VSS is actually putting out a signal. Suggest a DMM(Digital Volt Meter) connected to the wires of the VSS and spinning the front wheels. But....which wires? Is that VSS puting out a AC SIGNAL....or...a DC Signal? How many wires are on the VSS and how are the wires color coded?

30

AFTER TAKING A CLOSER LOOK I FOUND A WIRE BROKEN GOING TO THE VSS SENSOR REPAIRED IT AND NOW I HAVE SPEEDO, CRUISE, BUT THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS ARE STILL OFF I CHECK ALL THE BULBS AND REPL THE BLOWN ONES ALSO THE SPEEDO IS 6 MILES OUT I NOTICE THAT MY GPS AND SPEEDO WAS DIFFERENT HOW DO YOU RESET IT TO ZERO OR CORRECT SPEED? Thanks

6,170

Hmm.......First thing that comes to mind is....are the Tire sizes correct for this vehicle. Second....wrong Speed Sensor. Does the replacement have a small gear attached? Third...Speed o problem. Suggest you "double date"...with another car. Go down the road at 60mph and see who passes who to verify the error.

30

OK SO I GOT THE CAR RUNNING TO A GOOD PLACE AND CHANGE THE TRANS FLUID AND FILTER AND NOW I'M HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR GOING INTO REVERSE... ANY IDEALS?

6,170

Well....if you had Reverse BEFORE the Tranny work...and After...no Rev.....then I have to assume that Trans. Filter needs a second look see?

6,170

DIDY,,,,Ok...it's a New Year. So....what's new about this vehicle? Give us the GOOD news first.
