Asked by Adam Jul 01, 2017 at 12:20 AM about the 1998 Toyota Camry LE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The car started and ran for about 2-3 minutes then died.
We tried starting it back and it won't make a noise. Tried
starting it in neutral and still no noise at all. What could it
be?

Check the battery to be good and all connections to it,if these are good you may have a bad starter.

Starter is your issue then, low voltage from the battery you replaced caused damage to the starter.

Is there a way to get it started long enough to get to the parts store?

Adam try to bump starter with hammer if you can while someone turns key, this will some times work but is not a fix for it ,it will more than likely have to be replaced but may get it started for now.

Camry.. 2007 random over a year of turn key no crank full dash power ... rebuilt starter.. full of contact crap.. good then back to no crank wk later .. changed battery fine but went back to no crank after 4 days swapped relay with the blower fan and seem to clear it up... over two months now no problem.. perfect storm... weak starter pulled extra amps burning contacts in relay and forcing more strain on my older battery. Not easy to find hope it helps...

Any warning lights on or flashing when the engine IS running? Have you tried your extra Key for awhile just to make sure your Theft Deterrent system is not the cause?

I have this issue with my 94 Camry. It’s a 4 fly and I got it with a new starter, bought a new battery and OEM terminals, and a new relay, but no dice. Still have intermittent no start no crank. I have to jump the relay from the vertical points inside the fuse box to get it to go. Could my relay points in my fuse box be burnt out? I was thinking about the ignition switch behind the lock cylinder, but it’s a pain and a half to get to. Only way I’ve seen it accessed is by pulling the steering column from the inside and removing the whole steering assembly from car. Should I tackle this next or replace fuse box terminals first? When doing fuse terminals, should I run new wire?

Isaac...easy way to check the ignition switch AND the park neutral switch. You need a Digital Volt Meter and a helper. Go to the battery first and check voltage across the battery. Should be 12.3 to 12.6 volts DC. Go to the start Relay and unplug same. ID terminal #1 on the relay. With the relay REMOVED probe the female socket in the relay box with your voltmeter.....terninal #1. Have your helper turn the Ignition Switch to CRANK position and hold it there. You should see battery voltage on the VM. While still in the crank position....have your helper move the gear shift lever in and out of Park. In park...and or in nuetral..you should see battery voltage. Any other gear you should see near 0 volts DC. Get back with results.

Went to check that and everything is working fine and has been since. I’m thinking of replacing the alternator with a new one, as battery and battery terminals are new. It does have a vacuum leak, but I would see that as a no start with a crank or when I’m driving, it dying. It’s very loud on startup, but quiets down. Idk what the hell is wrong with this car. Every time I take it in to get looked at for the issue, it stops doing it. When I go down to diagnose it, everything tests fine and starts. It’s like it doesn’t want to be found. Do I just need to overhaul the starting system? If so, do you have any idea how to get this ignition switch out of the back of the lock cylinder? There’s no space to remove it unless I drop the steering column, but in my all data manual, it doesn’t have a procedure for this. Just the lock cylinder key replacement from the dash.

Suggestion....inspect the Intake Manifold on the engine. Look for 2 or 3 GROUND wires connected together and bolted to said manifold. Clean that ground connetion thoroughly with a wire brush. Reconnect. Carefull...do not break that bolt. Let us know if that ground was corroded.

I do not see any wiring directly connected to the intake manifold. All of it is connected with clips. If you could give me more information of where on the manifold I should be looking, maybe I can get a better clue.

One of these grounds is for the starter motor relay. Must be clean and tight.

I see none of those connectors on my intake manifold. Would these be located on the underside closer to where it mounts or between the manifold and the valve cover where the main harness runs through?

Assuming the photo above is your engine...with a good strong flashlight...check the underside of the manifold ...the area between the engine and fire wall. Also check the passenger side of the engine for a 10mm bolt with wires attached.

Isaac....curious...did you find those ground wires?

Uau!....I got the same problem...( with the same car ),when I turn on the key my car dont make any noise...Doesnt started...The only different is when I disconnect the wire from the starter and connect a wire from the starter to + pole (from the battery), my car start working for hours...The problem is when I turn off the engine ...doesnt started with the key. Autozone told me my starter is working fine ..Maybe can be the ignition key....Who knows..

Hello! I have a 2007 Toyota Camry . I took it to get painted And I had zero problems before I took it . Then when I go to pick it does not start . I put a new battery , starter and new fuses and nothing works. Jump starting it does not work either . I hot wired it to get it started and it did but nothing was working . The radio, brake lights, blinkers, windshield wipers, etc. Also, when I did that it only stayed running for about 10 mins. I never had a light or anything come on before . Help please

I’ve been having a similar problem but when I try to start the car, a larger than usual spark comes out of the starter and it doesn’t crank , not sure what might be causing this but this has happened twice to me and at the same slightly elevated driveway but when I start it on flat ground it starts like normal. I would appreciate any and all possible answers

I have Toyota Camry 2007 . Here is the complicate problem : When you drive about 20 minutes , then you stop at parking lot then turn off the engine . If you turn on the engine again , the car won't start , no crank and no noise . You had to wait around 1 hour and start again , the engine is started normal . I replaced the battery , alternator , starter , starter relay and finally I think the main problem is INGNITION SWITCH !
