Gas leak in 2000 Camry

Asked by Guru9DX1FJ Nov 02, 2020 at 07:24 PM about the 2000 Toyota Camry XLE V6

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently just replaced the valve cover gaskets on
the car. After about a year, finally got it running and
filled up the tank. Strong smell of gas but I figured I
had just spilled some on my hands. Pull into the
driveway, walk towards front passenger side and
the smell is overwhelming. Check in the engine bay,
can’t find leaks but the smell is strong. Look
underneath the car, a little bit of spotting but I can’t
find where it’s coming from. Then I notice spotting
in the back. Go back and look, the entire seam of
the tank seems to be leaking fuel. Car has been in
the desert since it was made. It seems as though
either the leak in the tank made its way forward or
there’s two separate leaks. Should I try fixing the
tank or replacing it? Could it be more than just the
tank? Thanks

Replace it. Unless you have a visible hole that can be calked or puttied, a seam leak is tough to fix.
