engine noise

Asked by CAM Feb 16, 2007 at 07:54 PM about the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier Coupe FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have 55000 miles on a 2005 2.2L cavalier and it just started knocking loudly at idle and sounds as if it is coming form the top front of engine. engine won't go over 4000 rpm sitting still I guess the rev limiter is cutting out. when raisng the rpm the noise quiets down but it is hammering enough to really worry! any idea would help! thanks

Hello, I would advise bringing to a mechanic as soon as possible. Knocking engines will only get worse. The good news is that rod knocks do not usually go away as the engine heats up, so at least you will not have rods popping out of the engine any time too soon. However, it is better to have this problem checked out before it gets worse. I hope it all works out!! CarGrrl
