car starts up and then shuts back off after a few seconds of idling

Asked by pkeller91 Dec 02, 2014 at 12:48 AM about the 2002 Toyota Camry LE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just replaced my '02 camry's battery, and after finishing and starting it up it would
immediately shut back off. It will turn over fine and turn on, but after a few seconds
sputters out and shuts back off. Not sure how replacing the battery suddenly caused this
to happen.

If it helps, I also just had an issue and had to replace my o2 sensor, not sure if that could
be any source of trouble.

Get some throttle body cleaner and clean your throttle body and IAC valve. If you need some instruction, just type in "Camry Idle Air Control valve cleaning" and several videos will come up. Check out this short video also: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcDoxEF8X-U

How about if your manifold directly sucked in some fall foliage... how wpuld one repair/fix that? And would it be the cause of my start up n sputter out situation i now have?

This just happened to my 2010 Camry. Long story short, my "security needed to be reset." I don't know exactly what the means, but the AAA guy fiddled with my key fob and the physical lock on my driver's side door, and suddenly my car was fine. You might have to Google how to reset the security, but whatever he did wasn't complicated and didn't cost me a dime.
