Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Just purchased a 2002 Toyota Camry with 84k miles. A last week I tried to start (it was like 70 degrees) and it was slow cranking but it started. the next few days it started normally, 2 days ago it slow cranked again but it started. now this morning, it slow cranked and it did not start, then there is just a click. I cleaned the termiinals and put a voltmeter to the Battery the reading started at 11.6V but slowly creeped up to 12.5V. Tried to jump the car but it didnt work, the voltage at the battery was still reading 11.8-12.5v even with the cables hooked to a running car. Headlights are nice an bright. Question I have is could this be the starter (I didnt check voltage at the starter lead yet)? Just found it weird that a jump did not work with 2 separate vehicles

Sounds like a either a bad battery or bad/corroded cable/connections. Those jumper cables are also suspect. Time to perform Voltage DROP test in the cranking circuit in order to pinpoint the root cause of this issue.

Battery is 3 months old, not ruling it out but it maybe something else, thinking bad / corroded cable, the negative cable looked corroded. I will do the V Drop test. tomorrow and see if that fixes the problem.

A good battery is 12.6-12.9 any voltage less than that ia a weak battery. Make sure you terminal wires are in nice condition. If the starter is not turning the engine over at all then yes it could be the starter. But yet the battery may have a bad cell as each is about1.07+v a cell and multiply that by 12v you have 12.9v. A battery sitting at 12.0v is 50% depleted even though you would think 50% depleted is 6v. the battery is for sure suspect but I do agree the other car jumping it should of at least turned engine over so I would have the battery Load tested too and if passes charged to 12.9v it should start up without a jump or if it passes buy some nice jumper cables (thick wire At least #2) and jump it off if starter does not work replace it and while you at it take that alternator to get it tested there has to be a reason the battery is drained it may need replaced too or its your terminals & terminal wires, Check ground from battery to frame and Grounds from engine Block to frame. and check all connections and look for shorted wires
