Car lost oil and won't start

Asked by Stephanie Aug 28, 2018 at 09:40 PM about the 2002 Toyota Camry LE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My husband was driving my car and the
RPM gauge shot up then the car died. He
tried to restart it but got nothing. Upon
further inspection, there is oil on both sides
of the engine and the dip stick is dry. We put
oil in the car but when we try to start it, it
squeals and won't start. The pulleys are
turning so it's not seized up as far as I can
tell. Is my motor blown?

Do you know where the oil on the sides of the engine's coming from? Since the RPM's shot up, it might be possible that the engine threw a rod. I might be wrong and if you can find the source of the oil, you may find the problem. Even if it's worse case scenario and you have to replace the engine, fortunately, it's a Toyota Camry and you can get used engines stupidly cheap.
